Gum disease can take on different forms but a common one is the accumulation of bacteria on the teeth. This can cause inflammation of the gums as well as other risk factors which can lead to the damage and loss of bone around the teeth.
Gingivitis is more easily treated at its early stages, which is when the bacteria first begins to attack the soft tissues and gums. Early signs of Gingivitis are when the gums are red, sore, inflamed and even may bleed during brushing and begin to recede along the tooth.
The next and even more serious stage of gum disease is periodontitis, where the bacteria infiltrates deeper into the gums and affect the sustaining ligament and bone structure holding the tooth in place. If this is left untreated, tooth loss can occur (painlessly) over time.
Most of our patients see our Hygienist on a regular basis in order to prevent this disease.
